Gluten-Free Surprises on a Walking Vacation in the Cotswolds

We were fortunate enough to go on a family vacation in England this spring, walking about half of the famed Cotswold Way that goes from Chipping Campden to Bath (or vice versa). This trail runs through the most beautiful Cotswold villages, farmland, and woodland. Unbelievably, even though we were walking, I actually gained instead of lost weight. And that is a good thing!

With a lot of research and advance planning, I was able to eat ample breakfasts, lunches (when an appropriate place was available along the trail), and dinners (on the nights I wasn’t too tired to venture out!). While this was truly wonderful, what was extra special about eating on this trip were the unexpected gluten-free surprises. Here are just a few.

When we arrived at one hotel, this gluten-free, egg-free, milk-free cupcake was in the room, complete with an ingredients list …

At a village tea house, I was able to enjoy a scone with “cream” and jam…

When I was flat out exhausted, this “ice cream” provided a pick-me-up and put a smile on my face…

And, at an Anglican parish church, this sign greeted me when I walked in the door…

It was a fabulous trip. AND this time, many of the protein bars I brought came back home with me (a first).

So pleased that you had so many positive experiences in your recent UK holiday break!
Have you considered sharing details of the establishments who delivered these surprises for you.
They would probably be very pleased to receive your honourable mentions!

I must declare an interest, we are the UK’s only NGCI craft beer brewer, and I’d like to make contact with your enlightened hotelier …

Meanwhile, thanks for all the trouble you take on on our behalf….

    Kindest regards
    Adam

Thanks for commenting, Adam. The Painswick (the hotel that left the cupcake in the room) deserves a shout out. What a truly special place.
