Very exciting news! The Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2023 has been Introduced!

The Food Labeling Modernization Act of 2023 was introduced on April 26, 2023. The press release is available HERE. The bill numbers are S. 1289 in the Senate and H.R. 2901 in the House.

Among many other labeling issues, the bill would amend FALPCA (Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act) to require that food product packaging disclose ALL gluten-containing grains. We’ve been down this road before with the FLMA of 2021, but we are making progress. As stated by Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) in the press release, “Food labels play an important role in managing conditions such as celiac disease and gluten sensitivity, but they need to be complete and easier to understand.”

Several groups are currently supporting this legislation. From the press release: “The Food Labeling Modernization Act is supported by Center for Science in the Public Interest, Consumer Reports, Consumer Federation of America, Environmental Working Group, International Fresh Produce Association, Gluten Free Watchdog, Celiac Disease Foundation, and Beyond Celiac.”

We will be posting information soon about contacting your members of Congress. If you would like a head start:

No, I don’t believe it has made it out of committee yet.
