Test Report Summary

Report Date: 10/16/2024

What was tested: Six bags of Trader Joe's gluten-free rolled oats, representing 4 lots were tested. Samples were tested following the oat protocol: 200 grams homogenized, 1-gram extractions/sample portions tested. Three extractions were tested.

Bag 1 (lot # WBBAU07.2025): All three extractions tested above the highest standard of 80 parts per million of gluten. A fourth extraction was diluted and tested to bring inline with the standard curve. This extraction tested at 120 ppm of gluten.

Bag 2 (lot # BBBAU07.2025): All three extractions tested below the lower limit of quantification for the assay used of 5 parts per million of gluten.

Bag 3 (lot # BBBAU07.2025): The three extractions tested at 13 ppm, 14 ppm, and 16 ppm of gluten.

Bag 4 (lot # WBBJL10.2025): The three extractions tested at > 80 ppm, < 5 ppm, and < 5 ppm of gluten. Additional testing will be done on this bag of oats. Update: A second grind was tested from this bag of oats. The results of the three extractions: 72 ppm, 5 ppm, 8 ppm.

Bag 5 (lot # BBBAU28.2025): All three extractions tested below the lower limit of quantification for the assay used of 5 parts per million of gluten.

Bag 6 (lot # BBBAU28.2025): All three extractions tested below the lower limit of quantification for the assay used of 5 parts per million of gluten.

What the results mean: The test results suggest heterogeneous (i.e., not evenly distributed) gluten cross contact within and between lots of Trader Joe's gluten-free rolled oats.

Previous testing: As a reminder, Trader Joe's gluten-free rolled oats were last tested in September 2022. Results ranged from < 5 ppm to > 80 ppm (see https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/product/trader-joes-gluten-free-rolled-oats/1162).

Gluten Free Watchdog issued a statement following the 2022 testing. See https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/news/gluten-free-watchdog-recommends-against-the-use-of-trader-joes-gluten-free-oats/.

Follow-up: Gluten Free Watchdog will be sharing the results with Trader Joe's and filing a complaint with the FDA. A public statement will be released when all testing is completed.
